Does your MEV Unit need a repair?

Your home MEV unit is much like other white goods and can experience errors and issues and some parts will require replacement or repair over time. Servicing every year and regular filter changes are recommended to lengthen the life of the MEV unit and ensure the system is not clogged with dust and debris.

What is Central Extract Ventilation (MEV)?

Central Extract Ventilation (MEV) is a whole-house ventilation system that continuously extracts stale air from multiple areas of the home, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms, and expels it outside.

Unlike individual extractor fans, an MEV system uses a single central unit connected to ducts that service the entire property. It helps maintain indoor air quality by removing moisture, odours, and pollutants, while drawing fresh air into the living spaces via trickle vents.

An MEV system provides several advantages over traditional extractor fans:

How do I choose the right MEV system for my home?

Choosing the right MEV system depends on several factors:

House Size and Layout: The size and design of your home will determine the type and capacity of the MEV unit needed. Larger homes may require a more powerful unit or additional extract points.

•  Airflow Requirements; Look for systems that meet the required airflow rates specified in Building Regulations Part F.
•  Noise Levels Consider quieter models, especially if the unit will be placed near living areas.
•  Energy Efficiency Opt for units with low energy consumption to save on running costs.
•  BPEC Accreditation Ensure the system is commissioned by a BPEC-accredited engineer to guarantee compliance with regulations.

How is a MEV system controlled?

MEV systems can be controlled either manually or automatically, depending on the model. Basic systems run continuously at a low speed and switch to a higher speed when humidity levels rise, such as during cooking or showering.

More advanced systems can feature sensors, such as humidity, which adjust airflow automatically based on environmental conditions. Some systems may also offer user controls via switches or remote devices to boost or reduce extraction rates as needed.
